Today the NHL Eastern Conference Northeast Division
Boston Bruins: Even
Major Additions: Brian Leetch, Alexei Zhamnov
Major Losses: Sergei Gonchar, Martin Lapointe
Leetch is a clear downgrade from Gonchar, but Zhamnov adds some skill and surprising grit. Lapointe was more of a character guy during his stay in Boston. Of course they will have to erase the memory of the meltdown against Montreal.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Loser
Major Additions: Eric Lindros, Jean-Sebastian Aubin
Major Losses: Gary Roberts, Brian Leetch, Alexander Mogilny, Joe Nieuwendyk
Though the Leafs have shed much of their aging core, they have not significantly replaced them with anything to help them over the hump. Lindros has not been himself since those concussions, and Belfour is like 85 and Aubin, though a decent backup, can't take over if Belfour's leg falls off.
Ottawa Senators: Loser
Major Additions: Dany Heatley
Major Losses: Martin Prusek, Marian Hossa
This was a hard one to call, but I assumed the Heatley-Hossa deal was a wash, so it came down to losing Prusek. They've lost their future in net and Hasek, like Belfour, is closer to needing a hip replacement than he is to the peak of his career.
Montreal Canadiens: Even
Major Additions: Mathieu Dandenault
Major Losses: Patrice Brisebois
They lose the last member of the '93 Cup Team, but Brisebois was getting old anyway. Dandenault is a solid D-man with Cup experience from his Wings days.
Buffalo Sabres: Loser
Major Additions: Teppo Numminen
Major Losses: Miroslav Satan, Alexei Zhitnik
Actually, getting Numminen to replace Zhitnik may make the defense better, but losing Satan was a loss they haven't replaced effectively. I see the Sabres wallowing again, at least this season.
